One Day Divorce

Divorce does not have to be a lengthy, cumbersome process. In fact, at The Lien Law Firm, we developed our signature One Day Divorce, where you do everything you need to do for your divorce in just one day.

How does it work?

You and your current spouse both need to be committed to settling your divorce amicably. You will come into our office together one morning for a 60-90 minute meeting with your lawyer. At this meeting, we will discuss all the specifics of your divorce, including what you want to do with your assets, debts, and parenting plan if you share children. Once we reach an understanding, you are free to leave. You both return toward the end of the day to review and sign the settlement paperwork. After that, your lawyer files it with the court and waits for further instruction.

Will a One Day Divorce work for me?

Clients with realistic expectations who come prepared are shocked at how simple their divorce really can be. Clients who have the most success with the One Day Divorce share the following attributes:

  • They have worked through the emotional layers of their divorce individually, including seeking counseling for any trauma they have experienced
  • They know what they want in the divorce and are focused on their long-term goals rather than anger or revenge against the other party
  • They are honest with themselves and their current spouse about their mutual desire and willingness to reach a settlement without court intervention
  • They complete their intake paperwork with our firm accurately so that we have up-to-date information about assets, debts, and financial responsibilities when we sit down for the first meeting

If this sounds like it could be you, then we are happy to speak with you about the One Day Divorce and see if it is a good fit for you.

It really takes just one day?

Kind of. Your part should be done in that one day. The State of Missouri has a mandatory 30-day waiting period before the judge can sign your divorce decree, so there will be about a month of waiting after we file your paperwork with the court. If your case shows any indicators of taking more than one day on your part, your lawyer will discuss that with you.

There are some other factors beyond your control that may make your case take longer, too. For example, if the other party decides they do not want to sign the paperwork that day, then you may need to come back on another day to sign everything. Or, depending on the nature of your affairs, there is a chance you’ll need to appear for court for a non-contested hearing. If anything like this happens, your lawyer will discuss it with you right away.

How much does it cost?

A One Day Divorce costs the same as any other non-contested divorce in our office. When you speak with us for your intake call, we will quote you a flat fee that includes your court filing fee and other incidentals so that you do not have a whole bunch of bills to deal with.

Does it work for more than just a divorce?

Yes! If you are not married, we can also use the same process to do a one day settlement for a child custody and support case. We will use the time to talk about your parenting plan and have papers ready for you to sign at the end of the day.
